Biography

I am currently an Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. I hold a Ph.D. in Arabic Literature from Cairo University, which I completed in 2014. My doctoral dissertation examined textual transformation in modern Arabic novels, a subject that continues to inform my broader research interests in Arabic literature, discourse, and cultural studies.

My academic career began in 2004 at Hadhramout University in Yemen, where I taught Arabic language and literature until 2009. I was subsequently appointed Assistant Professor at Hadhramout University, serving in this position from 2014 to 2016. From 2017 to 2019, I worked as a researcher at Lund University’s Centre for Advanced Middle Eastern Studies in Sweden, where I continued to develop my research on Arabic literature, discourse, and contemporary Arab societies.

I was also awarded a two-year fellowship from the International Institute for Education—Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF). During the fellowship, I worked on the project “Research Advocacy and Public Policymaking in the Arab World,” which focused on compiling an annotated bibliography of research on human rights in the Arab world. The project involved reviewing, assessing, and categorizing more than 400 Arabic-language sources.

In 2023, I completed a second master’s degree in Media and Communication Studies at Malmö University, expanding my interdisciplinary engagement with media, communication, and cultural production.

My current research interests encompass Arabic literature and discourse analysis, with particular attention to the intersections of literature, media, education, and society. I am also interested in capacity-building in higher education and in developing sustainable approaches to post-conflict recovery in Yemen. More broadly, my work explores the role of art, literature, and media in promoting democracy, gender equality, social justice, and inclusive social transformation in Yemen and the wider Arab world.

Alongside my academic research and teaching, I have extensive experience in cultural project management and in designing and delivering training for writers, researchers, journalists, and practitioners. My professional work has included supporting researchers in conducting rigorous studies and producing analytical and evidence-based publications, particularly within media organizations and think tanks.
